An animal that represents a tribe, family, clan, group or individual. Totems represent the ancestory of the tribe, family, etc.. Two people with the same totem are immediate family and should not marry. You are not allowed to kill the animal that is your totem. If your family, clan, tribe, or group doesn't have a totem you can adopt / choose your own totem though in truth most times when you "choose" your totem the totem is really choosing you. It is your job to protect your totem and in return your totem will protect you. It is important for you to learn and pass down the myth of your totem to others. Your totem acts as your spirit guide and helps guide you through life. One person can have more than one totem.
